Yesterday I witnessed what will sure to be one of the top moments of the year. I am still smiling just thinking about it and so grateful for the experience. We received our first real snowfall yesterday, since we acquired the farm property, and it was magical to traipse around as the snow fell to take some pictures and just be. The flock was loving the snow and there was a peaceful but delightful energy amongst the calm as the flakes silently fell. I noticed a lot of bird activity and decided to relocate the abandoned birdfeeders from the front yard to the back patio area where they could be more easily watched from the house. I have always been amazed at the appearance of birds you’d rarely see after a snowstorm as they search for food. As dusk started to approach, I went back out to just stand and be present. There is just something so magical about standing in a quiet place as snow falls around you. To my delight, I started hearing the familiar calls of the great horned owls that come each night close to the last light. Tonight, the calls sounded clearer. Maybe it was the acoustics of nature with the falling snow? So clear and beautiful as these nightly calls always stop me in my tracks. Call me weird, but this has been the most amazing sound and nightly experience to me ever since I stood on this land. The calls of these creatures who are so mysterious and seldom seen are just incredible! I stood in wonder leaning against the old barn just staring out into the woods and listening. Absolute perfection as the calls echoed through the trees. I had my phone out filming a video to capture the calls when all of a sudden, I saw movement and the outline of not one owl but two! Oh my God, they were right there looking towards the barn and I was there to witness them. I honestly can say that this was one the most exciting and invigorating moments I have felt. I stood in awe and wonder and was so grateful to see these beings that live on the land and who bring such joy each night to me. Our farm property is only a mile from our primary residence and is in the middle of suburbia, close to so many things yet when you drive down that gravel driveway, you escape to a small piece of heaven that feels separate from the world. The owls sat in the tree top last night and showed their presence to me and gave me one of the biggest thrills. I will remember this night for a very long time and it’s these moments that resonate for me. Be present. Take time to wonder. Be curious. Nature is amazing and has so much to offer. Get outside and bear witness to what is going on. It could be the most incredible experience of your life. I am grateful for this little piece of heaven, and I cannot wait to see what I discover next. Wow, just wow.
